Guru Vishal Ramani, artistic director of Shri Krupa Dance Company, a world renowned Bharatanatyam teacher, dancer and choreographer- extraordinaire, started this tireless journey in 1977 from a simple need to satisfy the thirst for Tradition amongst Indian immigrants. Today it is a thriving Center of Excellence for Bharatanatyam learning where the dance is taught within the strict confines of the style set by the Thanjavur tradition. Smt. Vishal Ramani, a disciple of Guru Mahalingam Pillai has brought her rich lineage of Raja Rajeshwari Kala Mandir, Mumbai to the bay area in its pristine form training over 1500 students and conducting arangetrams for over 200 students.
Uniqueness and niche of this school is Guru Vishal's vivid and brilliant choreography seeped in depth of both abhinaya ( expressional and dramatization aspects) and laya ( rhythmic measures) sculpted or customized to suit each dancer.
Vishal Ramani's most defining legacy is the discipline, hard work and devotion she has instilled in her students for Bharatanatyam in particular and Indian culture in general.
Both the teacher and her students have performed and received accolades the world over, including receiving awards & acclaim at the very bastion of this dance form – the annual Chennai Sabhas (cultural events), International Dance competitions in Barcelona, San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, Cleveland's Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival and full length performances in US, Canada, Australia and India. Through the years, SKDC has been very active in the local Community by raising funds or awareness for many causes through the power of dedicated dance performances.
Among several awards and accolades that Smt. Vishal Ramani has received some of the notable ones are - the community award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts and Humanities by The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Northern California, the Kala Seva Mani Award from Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival ( 2015), Nritya Mani Award by Cuttack Mahotsav ( 2014), Best Teacher is USA Award by the joint association of N. Murali of Music Academy and Papanasam Sivan Foundation Chennai, several art grants from the city of San Jose and a 2 time recipient of the Master-Apprenticeship grant from California Traditional Arts ( 2006 and 2015).
We are fortunate to have Vishal Aunty as our guiding force in this journey.
